Three-Day Furniture Making Workshop

Learn traditional furniture-making skills and create your own beautiful hardwood side table.

Three days. Real woodworking. A piece of furniture made by you.

Spend three immersive days in our traditional Cambridgeshire barn learning the fundamental skills of furniture making while creating your own hardwood side table from start to finish.

This workshop is designed to take you beyond a simple one-day project and give you a genuine introduction to the craft of making furniture.

Over three days, you'll work through the same stages a furniture maker follows – preparing timber, marking out, cutting and forming joints, assembling, sanding and finishing – while learning to use a range of traditional hand tools and woodworking machinery.

Everyone on the course makes the same side table, allowing each stage to be demonstrated properly before you carry it out yourself.

This isn't about rushing to produce something.

It's about understanding the process, developing confidence with tools and experiencing the enormous satisfaction of turning raw timber into a finished piece of furniture you can take home and use.

During Your Experience

Over the three days you'll learn how to:

  • Select and prepare timber for furniture making.
  • Accurately measure and mark out components.
  • Use hand planes, chisels and saws correctly.
  • Use woodworking machinery safely under supervision.
  • Understand the principles of jointing and furniture construction.
  • Cut and refine traditional woodworking joints.
  • Assemble and glue furniture accurately.
  • Sand and prepare timber for finishing.
  • Apply a professional finish to your completed piece.
  • Understand the sequence involved in taking a furniture project from raw timber to completion.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have experienced the complete furniture-making process and created your own hardwood side table to take home.

More Than a Furniture Course

Three days gives you something that simply isn't possible in a short workshop: time to become absorbed in the process.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Develop genuine confidence with woodworking tools.
  • Understand why furniture is constructed in particular ways.
  • Learn skills you can apply to future projects.
  • Work alongside other people learning the same craft.
  • Switch off from everyday pressures and concentrate on making something real.
  • Experience the satisfaction of producing a piece of furniture from raw timber.

You'll leave with considerably more than a side table.

You'll leave understanding how furniture is actually made.
